Food Culture

Fukui Prefecture is the best place for food, especially because of its seafood. It is very fresh and delicious. However, less and less fish is being eaten at households in Fukui.

To support spreading the charms of the local seafood, Fukui Prefecture has opened "Fukui Local Seafood Information Center" in the central area of Fukui City. The mascot standing next to Ms. Yorimoto Hanako, Planning Project Manager is "Fukutoto Kun" which promotes the seafood from Echizen Wakasa (Fukui Prefecture).

The fresh local fish and processed seafood from Fukui Prefecture are available at Fukui Local Seafood Information Center. They also have many other information including the delicious ways of eating them.

They had "The local dish made by mothers from fishing village" which were made by Fukui Fishermen's Association's female members. They served tasting dishes and introduced recipes of the fish which were not usually saleable because the sizes of the fish were too small to sell.

Since last year, Fukui Prefecture started giving "Seiko gani" which are female crabs(smaller) of Echizen crabs to every ninth graders in Fukui Prefecture once a year.

Fukui Prefecture also provides the lesson for the students to learn how to eat the crabs in proper way to enhance their interest in local seafood and increase their love for hometown. The instructor shows them the proper way of eating the crabs by using its scissors and nails.

Fukui Local Seafood Information Center is open on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For Saturdays, Sundays and National Holidays, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is located on the ground floor of Fukui fisheries center located by the side of the moat which is close to Fukui Station.
