Harvesting ”Kida Chiso", traditional vegetable of Kida district, Fukui City, begins

Harvesting "Kida Chiso", traditional vegetable of Kida district, Fukui City, has begun again this year. Growers sickle them one by one. The video by Fukui Shimbun (newspaper) shows the harvesting last year.

It is said that the "Kida Chiso" has been grown since about 1887 and its features are the thick leaves and strong aroma. It grows well this year because they had adequate rain in June this year.

The "chiso" came from "shiso" by a local accent. Shiso means "purple medicine to revive", which was used as a medical herb.

The "Kida Chiso" is recommended not only to make pickled plums but also juice. For juice, the aroma becomes better when boiled shiso is left overnight. The "Kida Chiso" and "Chiso Cider" are sold in supermarkets "Hearts" and JA farmer's market "Kineya."
