Spring Garden

Spring in Japan, it seems that cherry blossoms embody the season.
However, cherry trees are not so often planted in gardens of Japanese houses.
Although cherry blossoms are such loved by Japanese people,
it is said that they are not suitable for a garden tree.
The reasons are such as they grow too big, the roots spread so widely
and tend to have a large number of caterpillars.

By the way, my yard has burst with some spring flowers now.
The rosebush, which I replanted on ground from a pot at the end of last year,
has sprouted new leaves.
I wonder when the rose will bloom?
I look forward to seeing it. (H.S)

The season of plum

In the park behind Fukui City Hall, plum trees are in full blossom, you can enjoy the sweet smell of the plum.

You can enjoy the changing seasons in this park throughout the year.

There are plum trees around this season, festivals in summer,

autumn trees in fall and pretty illumination in winter.

And near the park, there is a shrine called “Sakae-no Yashiro”,

and they have beautiful drooping cherry trees in spring.

Olive berries

The olive trees in my yard bear berries this year too.
It looks more rich harvest than last year.
However, you cannot eat them without removing the astringency.
Actually, I failed to do that last year.
I will try somehow to eat them this year. (H.S)

Yasha ga ike, Japanese pond, Demon pond

On Oct.29th, I visited “Yasha ga ike” which is a Japanese pond and sometimes called “Amagoi no ike” (the pond of praying for rain). It is also called “Demon pond” in a play. This is a special tourist spot located on a mountain between Fukui and Gifu prefectures and it has a mysterious view. We took the road from Fukui side and walked about for 2hours to get there.
On our way to the pond, we enjoyed the colorful autumn leaves and nuts, river, and water fall.

As soon as we arrived there, we met two kind visitors from Gifu prefecture side who showed us where Yasha Gengoros (Japanese Yasha diving beetles) were. They also told us an interesting story about this pond.

According to them, a long time ago (A.D. 817 ), there was a drought in this area. A man with 3 daughters was sitting outside in deep thought, trying to figure out the solution for this drought. A snake appeared and then the man said to the snake, he’d anything if it ever rained here.

Soon after, it started raining and thundering and he was delightful enough to give a party for it. Then a handsome man came to his house and told him about the promise between the man and a snake. Apparently, the snake was the handsome man lived in the pond and let it rain. Now he wants a wife for it, one of the man’s daughters. Then the middle one (her name was Yasha Hime, Yasha princess) decided to become a wife of the snake which clearly meant to be a human sacrifice.

I said to myself, no wonder this place was just not beautiful but it had also solemn atmosphere.

Yasha-ga-ike pond and Yasha-diving beetle of late autumn

I climbed to Yasha-ga-ike pond on top of a mountain in Fukui Prefecture,
where I have always wanted to go.
It took two hours by the route via Hirono Dam on the Fukui Prefecture side.
Although the weather wasn’t that bad, it was chilly when I got to the pond
because it became cloudy and a mist was hanging.
It was a bit late for autumn leaves reflected on the pond
but I enjoyed the quiet and mysterious atmosphere thanks to the weather.
And, two men climbed up from Gifu Prefecture side taught me about famous
Yasha-diving beetle and salamander live in the pond, so I was able to find them!!

*Note : “Yasha” means demon.
