Yokokan Garden in Fukui City ranked No.4 again!!

2016.01.24

Places to visit

Yokokan Garden in our city of Fukui, which also is designated as National Scenic Beauty,
was ranked No.4 in The Garden Rankings of Japan by an American magazine “Sukiya Living”
(The Journal of Japanese Gardening).
Yokokan Garden used to be often highly ranked in the rankings before
and its highest was No.3.
One reason why it was chosen is that you can enter the beautiful tea ceremony house architecture and relax by sitting in the room as long as you like.
For reference, this time No.1 is Adachi Museum in Shimane Prefecture, No.2 is Katsura Rikyu in Kyoto and No.3 is Yamamoto-tei in Tokyo.
Here is a video that we took in the Yokokan Garden and uploaded on this site last year. (2’46”) (H.S)

Toyotomi Hideyoshi / Hokoku Shrine / Japanese Toka Ebisu Festival

I visited "Toka Ebisu Festival".

This festival is held at Hokoku Shrine in Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture on January 9th, 10th and 11th every year.

Ebisu is Japanese god of luck and good fortune.

Hokoku Shrine was built by townspeople in Nagahama who worshiped and missed Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536~1598) for the third anniversary of Hideyoshi’s death.

Hideyoshi was a lord and chief imperial minister.

In the Edo Period (1603 - 1867), Tokugawa shogunate (the government at that time) did not like the fact that townspeople still worshiped and followed Hideyoshi even after his death.

Therefore, the government forbade beliefs in Hideyoshi and destroyed the shrine!!!

Town's people must had been devastated… No!! (only they know how much that hurt them though...)

Actually, they destroyed the shrine but it did not destroy their beliefs, they moved the deity from the destroyed shrine to a house.

And after that, they placed the deity into a Ebisu (Japanese god of luck and good fortune) shrine.

They secretly kept worshiping Hideyoshi and praying for him in the back of the shrine.

Finally, on the 300th anniversary of his death in 1989, the shrine was rebuilt.

This is how Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Ebisu God have been connected for a long time.

To worship someone and or something, or to love and think of someone and or something,

it creates or makes us realize something almost like a miracle.

The 65th Nagahama Bonsai Exhibition of Japanese Plum Trees

2016.01.20

Arts and crafts

I visited "the 65th Bonsai Exhibition of Japanese Plum Trees" at Keiunkan, Nagahama City in Shiga Prefecture. It's a traditional Bonsai exhibition which is the best one in Japan for its history and scale.

First of all, I was amazed by how they overturned the fixed image of Bonsai. There were large trees lined up which could almost reach the ceiling. There was also a tree that was extremely old. I thought it must be old enough not to bloom, but it did have blossoms. I never get bored of looking at.

I saw small Bonsai pots on a tiered stand. I thought that it would be nice to have and cute to look at the small ones like those at home.

I interviewed a staff from Association of Nagahama sightseeing about the history of "Bonsai Exhibition of Japanese Plum Trees" and the high light of Bonsai of Japanese Plum Trees. Next time, I will release the main part which includes the interview.

During this exhibition, "The 4th Photography Contest of Nagahama Bonsai Exhibition of Japanese Plum " and other various events are also held.

STAR WARS and KUROSAWA

2016.01.19

Movies

It is well known that “Star Wars” series have greatly influenced by KUROSAWA films.
And it is believed that the first one in 1977 was referred to KUROSAWA’s “The Hidden Fortress”.
Actually, its famous characters C-3PO and R2-D2 were based on Tahei and Matashichi in the movie.
Also, Darth Vader’s helmet was designed from Japanese kabuto (samurai warrior’s helmet).
Come to think of it, the fighting scene with the lightsabers looks like Japanese style swordfighting.
Hereby, I would like to introduce you to an interesting video (2’41”) which both movies’ scenes were compared and edited on YouTube. (H.S)

Warm Winter / El Nino phenomenon / 2016

2016.01.18

Random thoughts

Usually, many days are cloudy in Fukui's winter. Because of this, the blue sky which sometimes appears between the clouds lets us appreciate it even morel!

Did you know that in any years end with "6" (such as 1996, 2006, 2016, etc.),

it is likely to have cold winters?

This information is based on a probabilistic fact.

It is 2016 this year so we are more likely to have a cold one.

Since 1947 whenever years were ended with "6", there have been

5 extremely cold winters,

2 usual cold ones and

no warm ones.

Although it has just snowed in Tokyo area today,

compare to every winter, we may have felt and realized that

it has not snowed much and it has not been that cold so far.

It has been a warm winter.

This is an effect of El Nino phenomenon that this winter has not been that cold comparing to our usual winter.

Do you know what El Nino phenomenon is?

Roughly speaking, El Nino phenomenon causes an abnormal weather.

It is because of the effect of wind around the equator of the Pacific Ocean.

And this wind makes the temperature of the ocean around south America goes higher.

This higher temperatue makes the weather strange.

It occurs once in a few years and it goes on for about a half year or a year.

When El Nino phenomenon occurs, in Japan, it tends to prolong the rainy season,

it is likely to have a cool summer and it is warm in winter as you may be feeling it.

In Europe, it rains in summer and flood occurs.

In Africa, it does not rain much and it occurs a drought.

It is not proven 100% yet that the global warming has something to do with this phenomenon.

As a person originally from Fukui which usually snows so much in winter,

I always expect and become ready for a freezing winter.

So it is very strange to experience this warm winter.

How is the weather like in your cities?

Is it colder

or warmer?
