Kyoto Restaurant ”Kyogoku Stand" : Relaxing and nostalgic in the Showa period style

2016.01.10

Kyoto and Nara

There is a full of relaxing and nostalgic Showa atmosphere in a restaurant “Kyogoku Stand” which is located on Shin-Kyogoku Street, Shijo-Kawaramachi in Kyoto.

The Showa period was from 1926 to 1989 in Japan.

The founder of this restaurant moved from Asakusa, Tokyo to Kyoto after the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and opened it in 1927.

In the restaurant, everything is remained the same as the founder opened the restaurant,

such as there are a marble counter, an old fashioned cash register, posters from the early Showa period and so on.

You can enjoy the relaxing and nostalgic Showa period atmosphere which may let you feel that you have just time traveled from present-day Japan to good old one.

Besides non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages, there is a large selection of food

such as Japanese, Western, Chinese and a variety of side dishes as well.

Over 130 kinds of food and 20 kinds of drinks are in their menu. (English menus are available)

Everything is a reasonable price.

For example, a steak combo is 900 yen, a few slices of ham cutlet is 500 yen, and a few pieces of braised pumpkin is 400 yen.

As we’d expect of Kyoto, it was fascinating for me to see that there was a couple wearing beautiful kimono and drinking sake.

When you visit Kyoto, how about enjoying the nostalgic Showa period atmosphere at “Kyogoku Stand”?

A Winter Waterfall [Video]

2016.01.07

Travel

Kegon Waterfall which I visited during a company trip last November.

It was very cold and stairs were closed due to snowfall. So we took an elevator which cost 550 yen round trip and walked through the underground passage to an observation tower located in front of the basin of the waterfall that is 100 meters high.

Regardless of the scale of waterfalls, they have special attraction and I can’t help staring at it.
It maybe from being awed by the power of water, it seems that the solemn atmosphere rises in winter.

Penguins’ New Year’s visit to a shrine

2016.01.06

Places to visit

In winter, you can see imposing 90 centimeters tall King penguins going for walking every day
at “Echizen Matsushima Aquarium” in Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture.
And until January 11, a small shrine and a torii(shrine gate) has been set up,
so you can also see the penguins visiting to the shrine through the torii cutely and stately.
(Starts 11:20, 15:10 each day)
Meanwhile, if the penguins find a curious thing on the way,
they will go off their walking course though ;) (H.S)

New Year's Night View in Fukui City

2016.01.05

Places to visit

The night view of Fukui city from mount Asuwa which I went for my first visit to a shrine of the new year.

The scenery in Fukui from Mt.Asuwa always makes everyone relaxed day and night.

Mt. Asuwa is 116.8 meters high and it is known as one of the cherry blossom viewing spots, and .

There are some cafes (you can enjoy views in Fukui while you are eating at my favorite cafe, Asuwayama Deck) and facilities such as a small zoo, museums, parks and so on.

Views are small scale. Getting there from Fukui station is very easy.

From JR Fukui station, it takes about 30 minutes on foot and 10 minutes by car.

So this is a pleasant out of-the-way spot in Fukui city.

Take few minutes to enjoy the scenery in Fukui from Mt. Asuwa if you are in Fukui city.

Cranes from 220 years ago [Video]

2016.01.04

Travel

It is the year of the monkey this year, so I think the three wise monkeys are everywhere. Besides those monkeys, to show you something seems very Japanese New Year, here are crane parent and its child from Nikko Toshogu Shrine.

It was taken in last November. Even though Toshogu Shrine was under major repair for Heisei era and Yomeimon Gate was fully covered, I was lucky to see this painting.

This painting was drawn with a skill called Toyu Makie which is similar to an oil painting skill. It was on the outer wall of Yomeimon Gate. The painting gets damaged from being exposed to direct rays of the sun, so it has been covered by a sculpture since 220 years ago. Because of this major repair, it is now appeared to the public.

Every time I see old paintings and documents I think that

we can still see works after hundreds of years later and we also can see letters and pictures inscribed on stones thousands of years later. What about the digital information from 20 years ago?

Maybe I should print out important photographs.
