“Hydrangea Parfait” at Itohkyuemon main shop’s tea room in Uji City, Kyoto

2016.05.22

Kyoto and Nara

One of the features of Japanese traditional confectionery is showing the season in advance.
And it does not only delight your taste buds but it is also pleasing for the eyes.
At a Uji tea’s specialty shop, Itohkyuemon’s main shop’s tea room in Uji City, Kyoto,
where is famous for Matcha (green powdered tea),
has started to serve seasonal “Hydrangea Parfait” since the other day.

The color is so gentle and delicate, which looks as if hydrangea blooms in rain
in front of your eyes.
It looks too good to eat, doesn’t it? (H.S)

Starbucks Coffee Kyoto-sanjo-ohashi shop with a breeze-enjoying floor

2016.05.09

Kyoto and Nara

There is a very Kyoto-style Starbucks Coffee at the foot of Sanjo-ohashi Bridge, Kyoto.
In Kyoto City, there are a couple of so-called Kyoto-style Starbucks but nothing compared to this shop.
Because this shop has a breeze-enjoying floor, which is a summer feature in Kyoto.
Even in the humid summer evenings in Kyoto, if you go out to the breeze-enjoying floor,
it would be pretty nice to feel the breeze through the Kamo-gawa River.
Although Kyoto cuisine restaurants’ breeze-enjoying floor might be hard for tourists,
here you only need to order coffee.
However, it is very crowded so you should go on weekdays or right after the floor opens.
How about spending the time of “The Kyoto summer = The Japanese summer”
while looking the flow of the Kamo-gawar River?

You can see the Kamo-gawa River right in front of you.
When the breeze-enjoying floor is full, I recommend its basement floor.

There is a bronze statue of “Yaji Kita” nearby.
※”Yaji Kita” is famous main characters, Yaji-san and Kita-san from a humorous adventure story in the Edo Period.

It’s also good to stroll the riverside.
You may find couples sitting at equal spaces.

You can feel their long history.

In the evening, it goes like this. It’s pretty crowded.

Philosopher’s Walk in Kyoto

2016.04.13

Kyoto and Nara

The Philosopher’s Walk, popular as a pathway, is located at the foot of Mt. Higashiyama,
Kyoto City.
It starts from Nyakuoji Shrine near Eikando to Ginkakuji Temple,
which is about 1.8 km along a canal and has been chosen as one of
“The best hundred roads in Japan”.
This is one of my favorite spots and especially the cherry blossom season is wonderful.
There are some cafes and Japanese sweets shops so you can take a quick break
if you get tired.

A philosopher Kitaro Nishida and his pupils used to walk this path in pondering.
That’s why it came to be called “Philosopher’s Walk”.
In the middle of the walk, near Honenin Temple,
a poem Nishida wrote as follows, was carved on a monument.
“Live and let live. At any rate, I go my own way.”

The cherry blossoms on the walk started to fall and the surface of the canal
was covered by the pink petals.

Hidden beauty spot in Kyoto “Konpukuji Temple”

2016.04.03

Kyoto and Nara

A little bit to the north of Ginkakuji Temple, near Shisendo,
there is the small temple “Konpukuji”.
Long ago, Basho MATSUO visited the temple and discussed with the priest
about elegance and taste at a tea hut in its garden.
Time passed and Buson YOSA visited the temple but the tea hut had fallen into ruin.
However, the village people still called it “Basho hut”.
As Buson admired Basho, he rebuilt the tea hut and made some haikus at the temple.

One more person that you should not forget is Takajo Murayama.
She is known as the heroine of the first one of NHK historical drama series.
She was a mistress of Naosuke Ii., the chief minister to the Tokugawa Shogunate.
She was put on public display alive beside the Sanjo riverside in Kyoto
for three days and three nights by the loyalists to the Emperor because she supported
Naosuke Ii who conducted Ansei no Taigoku [suppression of extremists by the Shogunate].
After all, her life was saved due to that she was a woman.
Afterwards, she became a Buddhist nun and passed away at the age of 67 at the temple.

Even if you don’t know history like this,
you can enjoy the tasteful tea hut and the beautiful garden especially in autumn.
Also, it is a world apart from crowded major sightseeing spots in Kyoto,
which you can spend a peaceful moment of quietness. (H.S)

It looks a nice rustic mountain temple which is off the beaten path.

“Yasakafront” Room in Kyoto

2016.03.06

Kyoto and Nara

When I went to Kyoto last month,
I checked in at a hotel and opened the window curtains,
suddenly Yasaka Shrine came into sight.
Although it was just an average business hotel,
I was able to feel gorgeous just because of the view.
In Kyoto, such rooms which you can see Yasaka Shrine in front of you
may be like oceanfront ones at beach resorts.

By the way, Yasaka Shrine is located at the end of Gion
and kind of a mark of Kyoto sightseeing.
As a matter of fact, The Gion Festival with an over 1000 year history
is held by this Yasaka Shrine.
And, on New Year’s Eve, they offer sacred fire and the visitors ignite a match cord
with the sacred fire carry back home spinning its tip around.
The sight on the night of New Year’s Eve is found only in Kyoto. (H.S)

This photo was taken through the window so it showed a shadow.
