Charms of Japan

In the back of this photograph, "Okunoin",

there is Kobo Daishi (Kukai) is resting in peace.

Do you know what Kobo Daishi (Kukai) (774-835) did?

Beside he made Kongobuji Temple on such high mountains

which are very isolated from the city

so everyone could concentrate on Buddhist training

such as meditation and reading sutras,

he also did several other astounding achievements.

I would like to introduce some of his achievements.

In 804, he went to China to study abroad.

He learned everything about esoteric Buddhism in only 2 years

which was such a short time for anyone to learn esoteric Buddhism.

After he returned to Japan, he founded Shingon Buddhism

and taught people what he learned in China

with easier words so people in Japan understood it easily.

He also made a university called Shugei Shchiin.

He made a significant change in Japanese education system

that he let anyone regardless ones’ social classes and/or status study there.

The things he learned in China was not only religion, he also studied construction.

He gained construction skills

that he renovated Manno pond in Kochi Prefecture,

which is the largest pond in Japan for farming.

Establishing a temple on such high mountains, I find that astonishing.

And top of that, he started a university, conducted construction work

and several other achievements.

It amazes me how he is unbelievably active
and incredibly intelligent to achieve all those things.

He is a great role model for me as well.

World Heritage Site in Japan / Koyasan Part-4 / Who was Kobo Daishi (Kukai) ?

Charms of Japan

In the back of this photograph, there is "Okunoin",

where Kobodaishi (Kukai) is resting in peace.

When Kobo Daishi (Kukai) was a child, his name was “Mao”.

He was raised by loving parents,

his father, “Saekino Ataidagimi Yoshimichi” and his mother, “Tamayori Gozen”.

As a child, it is said that he used to enjoy making Buddha statues with clay.

He studied very hard. He entered a university when he was 18 years old. He was very smart.

Besides studying in the university, he did many kinds of Buddhist training and studying.

When he was 19 years old, he became a priest.

His Buddhist name was “Kyoukai” and then after that it was changed to “Nyokuu”.

And finally, when he was 22 years old,

his name became “Kukai” which was the most well-known name for him.

More I get to know who he was,

I learned that he was an ambitious person whose passion was studying,

and never stopped studying and making changes.

After he entered the university, he showed how an active and curious person he was.

Entering the univerysity→Studying abroad in China→Learning Bhuddhism→Learning architecture→Teach Bhuddhism in Japan→He becomes curious about building a temple on Koyasan→Builds Kongobuji Temple on Koyasan

As we can see, Kobo Daishi (Kukai) was a kind of person who never stops moving forward.

He lived his life to the fullest.

We can learn from him. We can stay in action and live to the fullest.

World Heritage Site in Japan / Koyasan Part-3 / When is Kobo Daishi's Birthday?

2016.04.04

Charms of Japan

As I have mentioned in our previous blog that on March 8th, 2016,
I visited temples on Koyasan to take videos of a tree-planting ceremony.

Who is Kobo Daishi (Kukai) (774-835) ?

Roughly speaking, he is the person who studied Buddhism,
discovered Koyasan (mountains),
built a temple on the extremely high mountains
and he founded a religion, Shingon Buddhism.

As I introduced in our previous blog that Kobo Daishi (Kukai) (774-835)

was the priest who built Kongobuji Temple on Koyasan,

now you know that he was the extremely important person in Japan and Buddhist history.

Do you know when his birthday is?

It is said that he was born on June 15th, 774 at Zentsuji Temple in Kagawa Prefecture.

Actually, no one knows his correct birthday,
but on every June 15th, his birthday celebration is held in Shingon Buddhism Temples
in Japan. So we say June 15th is his birthday.

Famous persons who have the same birthday as his are follows.

Issa Kobayashi (haiku poet from Japan),

Billy Leo Williams (baseball player from USA),

Johnny Hallyday (singer and actor from France) and so on.

Do you know anyone was born on June 15th?

If you do, please let him/her know.
Maybe she/he will be happy know that.

World Heritage Site in Japan / Koyasan Part-2 / Who Made Koyasan?

2016.03.31

Charms of Japan

As I mentioned in our previous blog on March 8th, 2016,

I visited temples on Koyasan

( registered in the UNESCO World Heritage sites on July 7th, 2004)

to take videos of a tree-planting ceremony.

Do you know who made Koyasan?

Kobo Daishi did. The name, Kobo Daishi is shigo (posthumous name) of the priest Kukai.

Kobo Daishi (Kukai) (774-835) is the founder of Shingon Buddhism.

A young Kobo Daishi (Kukai) discovered the site on Mount Koya

and he wanted to use it as a training ground for esoteric Buddhism.

So he built Kongobuji Temple on Koyasan.

As I mentioned in our previous blog,

Koyasan is the area of mountains from Wakayama Prefecture to the south of Osaka.

There is no mountain officially called “Koyasan” even “san” means a mountain in Japanese.

*For more notes about Koyasan, please check our previous blog,

The UNESCO World Heritage Sites -Koyasan-

He built Kongobuji Temple on such high mountains which are very isolated from the city,

so trainee monks and visitors were able to concentrate the Buddhist training

such as meditation, reading sutras and everything between.

For sure, it is very quiet so it’s a perfect place for anyone to meditate even just by visiting.

The UNESCO World Heritage sites -Koyasan-

Charms of Japan

On March 8th, 2016, I visited temples on Koyasan to take videos of a tree-planting ceremony.

Koyasan has been registered in the UNESCO World Heritage sites on July 7th, 2004.

It is located in Wakayama Prefecture in Japan.
It is said that number of the tombs in Koyasan is the largest in the world,

there are about 400,000 of tombs.

Also the number of the annual visitors are largest in the world as well

which are about more than 2.6 million people.

It took about an hour from the bottom of the mountains to the top (Koyasan) by car.

I had terrible carsickness because the mountain path was very narrow and steep.

I strongly thought that getting to Koyasan can never be easy since a very long time ago.

I’m sure it was very hard for people in olden times to get to the top of mountains as well.

Of course it is very hard to get there because...

Koyasan is located on mountains (elevation of 1000meters)

which are higher than Sky Tree (634meters tall and the tallest TV tower in the world)!

As you may know, there is no mountains officially called “Koyasan”

even “San” means mountain in Japanese.

Koyasan is actually the name of mountains in Wakayama Prefecture to the south of Osaka.

It is a flatland which amid the 8 peaks of mountain

which make Koyasan looks like a lotus plant.

In generally speaking, Koyasan is as known as Koya 3 mountains

which are Tenjiku-San, Yoryu-San and Mani-San.

So when I say “Koyasan” and/or “the top of mountains” I mean the area

where there are many temples on mountains.

On the top of the mountains, there is “a normal town”

which has everything from a bank to a convenience store

likely almost I forgot the I was on the top mountains.

This was my first time to see a bank and a convenience store on such a high area.

Moreover, there are lots of temples, 117 of them!

There are also 52 places for monks and visitors to stay.

This is the town of temples.

Because Koyasan is located at an altitude of 1,000 meters and there are lots of temples,

so it is very soothing and refreshing just to be there.
