Charms of Japan

My friends from Japan and Australia got married. It is an international marriage. 45 guests from Australia and 55 ones from Japan attended to their wedding ceremony, reception, and an after-party.

At their wedding ceremony, they chose to have the Japanese traditional one called “Shinzen Shiki". "Shinzen Shiki" is held in shrines and the bride and groom usually wear traditional Japanese dresses, "Kimono" for the bride and "Hakama" for the groom. Becasue the groom is a high-tech man, during ceremony he was reading the pronunciation for Japanese script for wedding vows of "Shinzen Shiki" on his smart phone. This wedding ceremony started at 10am, after that, we had a wedding reception, an after party and a party after a party. The last one went on all night long.

For “Shinzen Shiki”, a traditional Japanese court music which is called "Gagaku" is usually played. “Gagaku” is the oldest classical music in the world that doesn't have conducors and it has been played at imperial court over 1000 years. A name of common “Gagaku” music is called “Etenraku”.

Every time I hear “Etenraku”, I feel proud of Japanese culture and I also feel dignified, and I just listen.

Autumn flower arrangement

Charms of Japan

I saw a flower arrangement contest for high school girls
in a building near Fukui Station.
Those works also look more like autumn seasonally.
I am happy to see traditional Japanese culture is passed on
to younger generations. (H.S)

Charms of Japan

In 1999, when he was 31 years old, he completed the 1000 Day Circumambulation and received the rank of Great Ajari(master in esoteric Buddhism). During the circumambulation, he had to go up and down the 48km mountain road with an elevation of 1,300m for 16 hours everyday, whether it rained, a typhoon hit or he had a fever, he had to do 1,000 times spending nine years. If he gives up, he should die so he always carried a knife and a rope with him for suicide. Also, he completed another dangerous circumambulation which was fast, no drink, no sleep and no lying for nine days. I’ve heard that he gave the scent of death on the third day. What was the enlightenment gained by his extreme situation? Here you can listen about that with English subtitles on YouTube’s TEDx channel(16’06’’).(H.S)

Star Festival

2015.07.09

Charms of Japan

We celebrate star festival in Japan on July 7th. By that day, we decorate bamboo branches with paper strips and ornaments to celebrate Altair and Vega’s reunion. We make wishes and write them on the paper strips and it is believed that wishes come true. I saw many wishes in my hometown. Some were serious, romantic and or peaceful, and some were very funny.  I saw a girl making a wish that she wants to be the strongest creature in the world.  A boy wants to be muscular like LeBron James. This boy wants to be completely somebody else. And this girl wants to be strong, she doesn’t mind if she won’t be a human being. I could not help myself laughing.

The Star Festival is a legend that is originated from China.  It is a story about the two bright stars, Altair and Vega.  Vega is a weaving girl and Altair is a cowherd boy.  Because they loved each other and had so much fun being together, finally they stop working hard.  The king got very angry and separated them by the big river or the Milky Way.  He allowed them to see each other only once a year across the Milky Way on the night of July 7th.
