My cat came to see rice planting

2017.05.27

Cats

Finally, we finished rice planting the other day.
In Fukui, that day was a hot day with temperature exceeded 30 degrees for the first time
this year. Even so, it was one with low humidity and breezy in the afternoon, so I was able to do farm work without getting heatstroke.

I have two cats, which are male and female. I keep the female one “Miiko” indoor completely but the male “Gil” goes in and out of the house freely and he is busy hunting sparrows, mice, and lately geckoes.

At the rice planting, Gil was prowling around as always.
Then, he came over to me washing boxes of rice plants.
He seemed scared of a moving rice planting machine though, he was hanging around me
and took a short rest in the shade. Probably he felt secure as his family was nearby.

Perhaps because he was outside all the time that day, he was sleeping deeply when he came
home in the late afternoon :)

Gil is creeping along the shade…

He is keeping an eye out for around pricking up his tail in a nearby field.

Gil is coming this way. I guess he found a good place to hide.

And he has settled there for the moment.

It seems like he liked the grass. Cats are geniuses with finding cool place.

We use leftover rice plants to plant rice in corners which the rice planting machine
could not plant, or give to neighbors, or plant supplementary.

The rice fields where rice planting is completed.
The rice plants will grow on strong in a week.
Recently, it seems direct seeding has increased.
One day direct seeding may become mainstream.

A New Comer is Miss Window’s Peak

2017.04.04

Cats

Last autumn, a new kitten has joined my mother’s family.
When my mother went to a springwater site at the foot of a hill where she often visited to collect water, the kitten was hobbling.
It looked tiny, thin and so weak.
The place was remote, so probably someone threw it away.
My mother already had two cats, but she couldn’t ignore and brought it home.

After then, she took it to a nearby animal hospital for examination and it got treatment for injuries and illness. It is female and its color is black and white but mostly white,
so my mother named it Shiro(white). And her forehead is so-called “window’s peak”.
She recovered completely at the end of last year and she was spayed, so I was relieved.

By the way, I was worried about compatibility between Shiro and the two cats have lived already. I have heard that in case of house cats, a new comer became stronger than old ones. More or less, it seems to be true because actually Shiro was jumping and moving vigorously but the old cats looked uncomfortable and they wanted to go out soon.

But now finally, they are getting used to each other.
Also, Shiro has been growing and has become tame.
I hope that they would get on well forever. (H.S)

Recent Shiro. She was fully grown.
She is friendly and clever.

Cats like high places | The first tower for cats

2017.01.23

Cats

I have two cats.
One is a male orange tabby “Gil” and one is a female black and white “Miiko”.
Last year, I finally bought a tower for cats I had been wanting.

After thinking which one to buy, I placed an order and received the goods safely
several days later.
Well, now, are the cats going to play on the tower?
As a result, they showed almost no reaction for many days…

So, I used silver vine as when I put a pet door and forced to put them on it so that they
could get used to it. Still, they did not show that much interest as I expected.
And when I began to regret that I might have wasted money, they have started spending more time on the tower.

Specially, Miiko liked the tower and recently she always takes a nap on the top of the tower!
Now they scratch the hemp roped poles of the tower and chase a mouse toy running up.
So I’m happy to see that the tower is absolutely necessary for them now.

Is there something below?

Gil seems to be relaxed in the house

Miiko is on the top, Gil is in the lower level. It shows their power balance?

Miiko likes looking out of the window from here, because birds come flying

Miiko occupied Gil’s room

The tower for cats I bought was this one.
I wanted one with a hammock but they didn’t have one for the size I looked for.
Hammocks are nice, aren’t they? It’s just an owner’s one-sided feelings and not cats’ though… (H.S)

Animal photographer Mitsuaki Iwago teaches “How to take cute photos of cats”

2016.09.21

Cats

On a TV show, an animal photographer Mitsuaki Iwago, who is well-known on Japan’s NHK BS TV’s cat show, talked about the secrets to take cute photos of cats.

To take cute photos of cats, first you need to get along well with cats.
In order to do so, you need to,
1. First, greeting
You can say “Good morning” or “Hello”. Your local language is better.
When Iwago greeted a cat in London with “Good morning” but it ignored him.
Because the greeting was American accent!
2. If there are kittens, you should say hello to their mother cat first
Where there are kittens, there must be their mother cat and is watching them.
So you need to greet the mother cat first.
3. Praise
Every time Iwago meets a good cat, he praises it “You are a good boy”
or “You are beautiful”. It seems that cats don’t feel bad hearing those words :)

After you became friendly with cats, it is time to take photos.
Iwago said,
1. First, greeting again with the eyes of cats
2. When you pet a cat, you should show your hand and pet it
(Don’t pet its head from above suddenly)
3. Use camera lower position, and take photos with praise
4. When you take photos of a black cat, it depends on light.
So you need take photos according to the light.

And now you might be able to take nice photos like Iwago?

By the way, Iwago doesn’t take photos by using a smartphone. One time when he went to a cell-phone shop to get one without camera, and its woman staff told him “I will show you how to take cell-phone photos :) (H.S)

Cats in Fukui “Pet Door”

2016.07.21

Cats

Lately, a long-awaited pet door was installed in my house.
Pet doors have a flap in the lower part, so pet dogs and cats can pass through freely.

There used be a sliding door that opened easily even by cats, and I had to shut the door
every time my cats opened it. Especially in winter, it bothered me that cold air entered
the room.

Then, I thought that at last both humans and cats would be able to live with no stress.
However, the door is a totally new stuff to my cats and they couldn’t pass through it immediately.

So I lured them by cat food, toys and silver vine’s powder on this side of the flap
so that they learn to pass through it. Then my female cat Miiko learned to be able to pass through after she tried a few times.

But my male cat Gil doesn’t try to do that. Although he wanted to eat the silver vine’s powder, he didn’t even touch the flap with his forepaw, and finally turned around dejectedly.

He is such a cat as to catch a swallow but cannot even pass through just a flap.
I was wondering how to deal with this, but only recently he learned it and he can
pass through it now.
At any rate, I think that the creator of pet door is great. (H.S)
