Eiheiji Temple in winter / Waterfall "Reiro no Taki"

2016.01.25

Places to visit

Although it’s a warm winter this year, we cannot talk about a winter of Hokuriku region without snow. Because of a frigid weather which started last week, it has been cold in Fukui since then.

Moreover, in Fukui city, we just had more than 30cm of snowfall overnight which was causing a lot of troubles for commuters.

Meanwhile, I visited Eiheiji Temple to see its snow view.  Anywhere in the temple precincts, I could hear the sound of the water stream from the Eiheiji River.  The river is flowing next to the side of the path leading to the shrine. As we pass the side entrance for visitors to the temple, keep walking further deep, and the sound of the water stream becomes louder.

The origin of the sound of the water stream is from "Reiro no Taki" (a waterfall) which is located by the opposite shore of "Jakko En" (a small park which has a few cemeteries).

It is a small waterfall which drops only more than ten meters and the falling water from the vertical steep rock looks quite beautiful.

I thought that the winter of water scenery is nice to look at.

Yokokan Garden in Fukui City ranked No.4 again!!

2016.01.24

Places to visit

Yokokan Garden in our city of Fukui, which also is designated as National Scenic Beauty,
was ranked No.4 in The Garden Rankings of Japan by an American magazine “Sukiya Living”
(The Journal of Japanese Gardening).
Yokokan Garden used to be often highly ranked in the rankings before
and its highest was No.3.
One reason why it was chosen is that you can enter the beautiful tea ceremony house architecture and relax by sitting in the room as long as you like.
For reference, this time No.1 is Adachi Museum in Shimane Prefecture, No.2 is Katsura Rikyu in Kyoto and No.3 is Yamamoto-tei in Tokyo.
Here is a video that we took in the Yokokan Garden and uploaded on this site last year. (2’46”) (H.S)

Shibata Shrine in Fukui City

2016.01.14

Places to visit

As you walk along Kitanosho Street where is close to JR Fukui Station,
you will find torii(shrine gate) on the sidewalk.
When you pass through the torii, there is the Shibata Shrine which enshrines
a Japanese military commander Katsuie SHIBATA, his wife Oichi no kata and
her three daughters.
Although it is a very small shrine, it seems to be a popular spot for Japanese history fans
as there are statues of Katsuie, Oichi and the daughters.
Also, they have their original Goshuin note.
※Goshuin is a stamp given at a shrine or a temple.

Recently, a nice Italian restaurant opened right next to the shrine.
It might be a pretty unique sight because the western-style restaurant and the torii
look like all-in-one. (H.S)

Penguins’ New Year’s visit to a shrine

2016.01.06

Places to visit

In winter, you can see imposing 90 centimeters tall King penguins going for walking every day
at “Echizen Matsushima Aquarium” in Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture.
And until January 11, a small shrine and a torii(shrine gate) has been set up,
so you can also see the penguins visiting to the shrine through the torii cutely and stately.
(Starts 11:20, 15:10 each day)
Meanwhile, if the penguins find a curious thing on the way,
they will go off their walking course though ;) (H.S)

New Year's Night View in Fukui City

2016.01.05

Places to visit

The night view of Fukui city from mount Asuwa which I went for my first visit to a shrine of the new year.

The scenery in Fukui from Mt.Asuwa always makes everyone relaxed day and night.

Mt. Asuwa is 116.8 meters high and it is known as one of the cherry blossom viewing spots, and .

There are some cafes (you can enjoy views in Fukui while you are eating at my favorite cafe, Asuwayama Deck) and facilities such as a small zoo, museums, parks and so on.

Views are small scale. Getting there from Fukui station is very easy.

From JR Fukui station, it takes about 30 minutes on foot and 10 minutes by car.

So this is a pleasant out of-the-way spot in Fukui city.

Take few minutes to enjoy the scenery in Fukui from Mt. Asuwa if you are in Fukui city.
