Deep connection between Nara and Wakasa region of Fukui Prefecture

2016.07.18

Life in Fukui

It is said that long ago, a deity of Wakasa was late for a gathering of Gods at Todaiji Temple in Nara, so he donated sacred water to a well at the temple from Wakasa as an apology.

Even today, they say that Nara and Wakasa has been connected through the well,
and the event “Omizuokuri”(deliver water) is held at Jinguji Temple in Obama City, Wakasa, and ten days later “Omizutori”(draw water) is held at the Todaiji Temple in Nara.

Also, both cities have been sister cities for the history more than 1,200 years.

By the way, speaking of Nara, “Kakinoha-zushi”(pressed sushi wrapped with persimmon leaves) is well known. Its fish meat is mackerel, and in the past, it was caught in the Kumano-nada Sea and it used to be transported to Nara via Kumano-kaido Road.

Incidentally, there is a town called “Wakasa” in Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture.
This is because many people migrated to Okinawa from Kansai region during Ryukyu Kingdom era, and at that time, the local people thought that Kansai was called Wakasa.

In fact, in Wakasa region, unlike the northern region(Echizen), its dialect is similar to the Kansai dialect, so we could say that Wakasa is a part of Kansai culture region. (H.S)

Changing Townscape of Fukui

Life in Fukui

サンロード北の庄

Sunroad Kitanosho Shopping Street, which is located in the center of Fukui City, close to Fukui Station has changed its landscape a little. The building which you can see in the back of this photograph is the top parts of a brand new emporium "Happiring" which just had its grand opening in front of the west gate of Fukui Station in April, 2016.

"Kaika-tei Kuri-ya" is under construction in Hama-machi area, a short distance from the station. Now, we can see many wooden boxes attached to the outside of the building. This building was designed by Kengo Kuma, who designed New National Stadium in Japan.
Daily dishes and souvenirs will be sold at the "Kaika-tei Kuri-ya". On the left side in the photograph, you can see another restaurant (blackish building of wooden framework), "Kaika-Tei sou-an" which was built in 2008, designed by the same architect Kengo Kuma for the stadium.

Both areas have old buildings. Now that people are planning not to build only new buildings, but they are also planning to use those old ones to make them into sylish stores and/or offices as well. I personally like old things because I feel at ease with them. I'm excited that these areas will become nice streets which will fuse old things with new ones together.

Exceeded 10million!! / Passengers of Hokuriku Shinkansen (bullet train)

2016.05.10

Life in Fukui

As a bullet train from Tokyo, "Kagayaki 501"

arrived at Kanazawa station in Ishikawa Prefecture on April 13th, 2016, at 8:46am,

the number of passengers using Hokuriku Shinkansen (bullet train) exceeded 10million

since it opened in March last year.

This was why, Kanazawa train station was extremely crowded.

Have you ever ridden Shinkansen (bullet train)?

If you will ever have a chance to come to Hokuriku region,

how about taking the Hokuriku Shinkansen here?

I would like to share a video of "Japanagos",

"Kimonos, Gardens, & Gold! Our trip to Kanazawa! "

Please enjoy!

Not just a Japanese businessman but quite a magician!!

2016.04.08

Life in Fukui

We had a surprise visitor at our office the other day.

He is a friend of our chairman,

and he is a general manager of Fukui branch of a life insurance company.

He said “I will be transferred to a different branch from tomorrow.

I made a promise with your chairman to show you my magic before."

So he came to our office before he left Fukui.

Of course, there must have had tricks in his magic, but we couldn't tell them at all.

Actually, he learned from a famous Japanese magician, Mr. Maric,

so it was no wonder that he was so good at it and we couldn’t see
the secrets of his magic tricks.

He left Fukui already, but we made a promise with him

to show us his new magic tricks when he comes to Fukui.

Although he is a businessman who works at a Japanese company

just like many other Japanese people, he has such an astonishing magic skill.

As I thought that his magic skill can be helpful for his work in sales as well,

he said that doing magic tricks has nothing to do with his work.

He just simply loves doing it.

He showed us several magic tricks.

Today, we'd like to introduce the first part which is using a coin and bills.

Japanese girls always love kimono!!

2016.03.25

Life in Fukui

It seems that kimono culture has remarkably declined year by year
but the spirit of Japan such as enjoying kimono is still alive.
Even if preparation before wearing is so hard,
Japanese girls always like kimono very much!
The other day, a friend of mine decided to wear furisode(long-sleeved kimono),
chose nice one(rental kimono!), dressed overall with hair set, makeup and
artificial nails in a beauty salon which has a photo studio.
Then, finally a professional photographer took pictures of her beautifully.
He did the photo shoot not only in the studio but also at Shibata Shrine on location.

Here is one of the photos taken on that day.
It’s gorgeous, isn’t it? (H.S)
