Recommendation of fancy Japanese-style restaurant in Fukui City “Kaika-tei sou-an”

2018.07.29

Gourmet

The “Kaika-tei sou-an”, which is the annex of a long-established restaurant located in quaint Hamamachi Street. A famous Japanese architect, Kengo Kuma designed it and its appearance which is covered latticed wood is very unique and modern-looking.

That is a restaurant to visit on a special day. A friend asked me to celebrate her birthday at the “Kaika-tei sou-an”, so I could visit the other day for the first time in years.

In a quiet and sophisticated atmosphere, I could enjoy the excellent meal and drink, which was such a luxurious moment. (H.S)

The latticed wood is a moderate screen from the outside.
It looks cool and calm especially during the summer season.

Appetizer ‘Sea urchin tofu, water shield, young corn’

Soup ‘Conger pike with green tea and arrowroot, red and white thin noodles’

Grilled dish ‘Tilefish with XO, spinach sauce’

Special dish ‘Grilled Japanese beef with white miso souce’

Rice dish ‘Steamed rice topped with eel, miso soup’

Tempura as a dessert, "Tengiku" in Fukui City

2018.06.25

Gourmet

I sometimes go to a tempura restaurant "Tengiku" for lunch, where is located in a corner of so-called Katamachi in the center of Fukui City. I always eat a simple but nice tempura rice bowl which is 800 yen. Tempura of shrimp and "Kakiage", tempura of mixed vegetables and seafoods, are on top of the rice and it is served with some pickles and miso soup of clams .

At the first time, I was surprised that they served even a dessert at the price. The dessert was tempura of "Ohagi", a rice ball coated with bean jam. And after that, I feel like going there when I want to eat the dessert.

“ECHIZEN-BAR RADICARE” -A restaurant serving dishes prepared with fresh local products in Fukui-

outside shot of the restaurant

A friend of mine and I had lunch at “Echizen-Bar Radicare” in Fukui City. It’s a restaurant which serves dishes prepared with fresh local products in Fukui Prefecture. I arrived at the restaurant at around noon, but the place was almost completely full. Luckily there was one table for us.

They serve 5 different kinds of lunch combos and it’s 1000 yen for each one.
Of course, lunch combos are prepared with fresh local products in Fukui Prefecture as well as any other meals at the restaurant. They make the meals as customers order, so the customers can have freshly cooked hot ones.

The photograph above is a hamburger steak combo. The hamburger steak is served with the special sauce which is made with grated daikon radish and ponzu sauce (soy sauce containing citrus juice). A friend of mine had this combo and she said that the special sauce was refreshing and good to eat with the hamburger steak. The special sauce made a heavy and rich hamburger steak light and even tastier.

I had a hamburger steak combo which was served with demi-glace sauce (brown sauce) on the hamburger steak. The salad which was prepared with fresh vegetables was good as same as the miso soup which was prepared with amazing broth.
The hamburger steak was great. The demi-glace sauce (brown sauce) and a medium sunny side up make a perfect combination with the juicy hamburger steak.

The atmosphere of the restaurant is stylish and relaxing.
Because the restaurant is located in the middle of a business district in Fukui City and it was during the day on weekdays when I visited, there were many business people.

As the name of the restaurant is “Echizen-Bar Radicare” (Echizen Province was an old part of Fukui Prefecture), they make many dishes using the local products from Fukui Prefecture. You can see them in the menu on the wall.

They open for dinner as well.

sake of Kokuryu

I saw a bottle of my favorite sake from Fukui. I’m sure the sake and the dishes at the restaurant would make a perfect combination.

Recommendation of cafe and meal in Fukui City “manimani”

2018.04.12

Gourmet

The other day, I went to cafe "manimani" and I will introduce it this time. I had heard that their meal is so good and I sometimes pass in front of the shop by car but it was the first time I entered it. And I really liked the “manimani”. So it is likely to become my favorit cafe where I often want to go to.

They offer set menus with side dishes of plenty of locally grown vegetables. That day I didn’t eat dessert because I was full but I hear their homemade desserts are very popular.

After all, I am happy that they offer healthy meal and I could get plenty of vegetables. Although the cafe was pretty busy, the owner and staff served us well, in a natural calm manner with warmth and it made a favorable impression.

[Side dishes of the month]
Greens and chopped dried radish with enokidake mushroom
Spanish omelet with squash, shimeji mushroom and bacon
Deep fried freeze-dried bean curd with starchy enokidake mushroom sauce
Octopus, seaweed and onions with vinegar dressing
Twice cooked pork with cabbage and bamboo shoot
Floury potatoes with sakura shrimp -shore flavor-
Sauteed carrots (their regular menu, which is tasty that could change your image of sauteed carrots. Even those who don’t like carrots can eat this.)

They also sell lunch boxes and take-out dishes. (H.S)

Recommendation of izakaya in Fukui City “Shokunin Futari”

2018.02.22

Gourmet

On the weekend just before Fukui was hit by record snowfalls,
I went to the “Shokunin Futari”, which I had always wanted to go to.
*”Shokunin Futari” means two artisans.

I’ve heard that it is difficult to make a reservation, so I called more than two weeks before
and I could make a reservation. I ordered 4,000 yen course in advance. (They accept from 3,000 yen course)

At the shop, a married couple offers delicious dishes. They buy fresh seafoods in Fukui
and from various fishing ports in Japan. Also, the menus include Japanese food and
Mediterranean food so that you can enjoy at the same time.
And, everything was so delicious. I am sure you’ll have a wonderful time.

Inside the shop

Steamed egg hotchpotch (appetizer)

The dishes were served one after another.

The course finishes with paella which is so good.

The owner is a tough-looking person (in fact, friendly) and he greets very loud when he serves appetizer. So I was surprised at that but I pulled myself upright automatically.
You can take it as “receiving keisaku” during zazen (sitting meditation) ;) (H.S)
