Let’s learn about Tenshin Okakura [PR for Fukui]

Tenshin Okakura was born in 1863 when five years before the Meiji Period comes.
The family of Okakura was samurai served in Fukui Domain.
Tenshin was born in Yokohama because his father worked as a trading merchant there
by order of Fukui Domain at that time.
However, on various occasions, he said that Fukui, where his parents were born and raised, was his own hometown.

 


Tenshin Okakura prevented discarding precious Japanese arts and appealed Japanese culture to the world during the Meiji Period when Japan had been westernized.
Furthermore, he actively held exhibitions and lectures abroad at that time,
and published the famous book called “The Book of Tea” in English.
