Let’s learn about great figures of our hometown [PR for Fukui]

On February 7th, 1881, the northern region which was a part of Ishikawa Prefecture and
the southern region which was a part of Shiga Prefecture became one and the present Fukui Prefecture was born. Fukui Prefecture set the day as “Hometown Day” and holds various events so that people of Fukui improve understanding and pride about our hometown.
Also, on this occasion, they introduce great figures from Fukui Prefecture.
Sanai Hashimoto created Japan’s future like giving major direction of the Meiji Restoration with predecessors in Fukui.
The lord of Fukui Domain, Shungaku Matsudaira was called one of the four remarkable feudal lords.
Genpaku Sugita published “New Book of Anatomy” 240 years ago.
He contributed to development of a lot of learning including medical science.
Sagen Ishizuka advocated dietary education for the first time.
After the war, an Oriental scholar Shizuka Shirakawa won the Order of Culture.
Fukui Prefecture established the Shirakawa Shizuka Kanji Education Prize and
gave awards to teachers who practiced advanced education.
