Following in the footsteps of Tsutomu Mizukami [PR for Fukui]

I will introduce the works of Tsutomu Mizukami and the places associated with him. Tsutomu Mizukami was the writer from Fukui Prefecture received the Naoki Prize and passed away in 2014.

Mizukami was born in Hongo Village (the present Oi Town) in 1919. He received the Naoki Prize for his novel, "Temple of the Wild Geese", which was written based on his own experience of his childhood at a Zen temple.

Mizukami wrote many outstanding novels including "Gan no Tera" (Temple of the Wild Geese) which won the Naoki Prize and "Ikkyu", (the biography of a Zen monk) which won Junichiro Tanizaki Prize. In 1998, he was designated as a person of Cultural Merit in 1998.

Seiichiro Kuboshima, who is a writer, the founder of Shinano drawing Museum and the Mugonkan (Silence Museum) talked about his father, Tsutomu Mizukami, intriguing parts of Mizukami's works and memories with him.

Jakushu Itteki-bunko (cultural center and museum)
Established by Tsutomu Mizukami in 1985

Every year, the memorial service for Mizukami is held at "Itteki-bunko", which was established by Mizukami for children in his hometown, Oi Town to get them read books for their lives and to make their dreams to come true.
